Lesson 31: Diligence in stability
Read 2 Peter 3:1-18- https://www.bible.com/bible/59/2pe.3
14 Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.
15 And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him,
16 as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other Scriptures.
17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people and lose your own stability.
18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
The question at the end of our last lesson was: What will you wish you had finished (which God has asked you to do) when you stand before Him? Maybe this would be sharing Jesus with someone you love. Maybe this is finishing a project He has asked you to complete.
Our verses today remind us to be diligent in doing what He asks of us now while there is still time. If you are in a situation right now where you are asking for something from God and He has not yet answered, then take this time to do what He has asked you to do. Speak to the one you love about Jesus. Finish your education you have begun, with honor and diligence to learn all you can – seeking His way rather than man’s way in what you learn.
Peter’s reminder in Verse 17 is to be watchful of what you hear and believe from the world around you. As we read in previous lessons, there is a great deception already building in this world, and we must know Truth if we are to be able to withstand and escape this deception. We must be prepared for it to increase, and not be surprised or dismayed by it – for Jesus told us it was coming and we should be prepared.
The last reminder in this book, and for this last lesson of this study, is to grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. There is only one way we can do this: We must spend time each and every day reading and studying the Bible and then doing what He asks us to do immediately. We cannot put off till tomorrow what we can do today, because tomorrow may not come. This is not a cause for fear, but of great hope and rejoicing as we continue to look up expectantly to hear His call for us. It is a time to put aside the things of this world that have held us back from doing His will. It does not mean we sell everything we have and go to a mountain to sit and wait for Him – we continue in our jobs or in our classes or in our family life, but with the focus on Him and doing for His kingdom what He asks us to do, when He asks us to do it.
*Memorize 2 Timothy 2:15.
1 Peter 4:7-11 - The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.
