Lesson 3: Building a new relationship with God

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
12 Blessed are you, O LORD; teach me your statutes!
13 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.
14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.
16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
When we become children of God, our desire is to please Him increases. As we read in the first verse of this section, we want to be pure and want to keep our life pure for Him. This is evidence God has entered our heart and made us a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:7).
Verse 10 again emphasizes our whole heart is engaged with God now, and the desire of our heart is that we will not wander away. Therefore, as we read in verse 11, we begin to hide His word in our hearts – memorizing it. As we do so, we open our hearts to let Him teach us (verse 12) what His ways and words mean.
The last four verses of this section show us an important truth about how God’s word works in our lives. As we begin to tell others (verse 13) about what He has done in our life, we usually get questions from those we tell. They want to know why we believe what we do, and God wants us to be able to answer the question to anyone who asks (1 Peter 3:15). Then, as we return to the scriptures to find the answers to the questions we’ve been asked, we find them delightful riches (verse 14) and His thoughts open our eyes and understanding to teach us more about Him (verse 15).
Verse 16 then reconfirms our desire to learn and memorize more of His word so He can use it in ever greater ways in our life. The answer we give to our friend who has asked why we believe as we do is but a tiny part of what we have learned from Jesus as we discovered the answer.
