Lesson 13: Life for Eternity
www.bible.com/bible/59/psa.119
89 Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.
90 Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast.
91 By your appointment they stand this day, for all things are your servants.
92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction.
93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have given me life.
94 I am yours; save me, for I have sought your precepts.
95 The wicked lie in wait to destroy me, but I consider your testimonies.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection, but your commandment is exceedingly broad.
The last habit to be changed in this Psalm is the habit of how we look at life. It is natural for us to see life as being only this temporary time here on earth; and when we focus on this life, all the experiences we encounter take on a much larger and different importance than they should.
But our habit of focus needs to change from the present to the eternal, just as verse 89 says – “Forever, O Lord…”
Do you believe His faithfulness endures forever (verse 90)? We are so tempted to measure His faithfulness by what we see happening in this moment in time, and forget to notice His gaze is on the whole of eternity – a much bigger time than we are able to see or even comprehend.
Do you see His plan for all eternity (verse 91) instead of just the outcome of one day’s work?
In each of these verses see the change of focus from the present to eternity:
- My delight is in the eternal word of God.
- I will remember God’s word forever.
- I am God’s and will be saved forever.
- The traps of the wicked are only temporary; I am free to spend time with God.
- The best this earth can hold is limited, but His word is forever.
Measure the importance of everything in life by the length and breadth and width of eternity – only what you can store in Heaven will measure up (Matthew 6:20).
