Lesson 17: Honor from and for God
www.bible.com/bible/59/psa.119
121 I have done what is just and right; do not leave me to my oppressors.
122 Give your servant a pledge of good; let not the insolent oppress me.
123 My eyes long for your salvation and for the fulfillment of your righteous promise.
124 Deal with your servant according to your steadfast love, and teach me your statutes.
125 I am your servant; give me understanding, that I may know your testimonies!
126 It is time for the LORD to act, for your law has been broken.
127 Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold.
128 Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way.
There is a time in our maturity in God and His word when our own honor becomes less important. As we see in the first two verses of this section, we do not want to be dishonored for it would seem to bring that dishonor on Him as a result.
But soon our focus becomes not our own honor, but a longing for God to act for Himself – His honor is based on His ability to keep His every promise. We see many of those promises as they affect us personally – verses 123-124. Soon, however, even this part of ourselves is lost from our focus as we simply become His servants for His use as He wills.
Then our focus becomes the desire for His plans to be carried out in full as He has planned and promised them to be. Is it our desire for Him to act in our life so His broken law can be made whole again in us, so others can see what His fulfilled law looks like? Such desire is real in us when we truly begin to love His law, His plan, above every other thing in our life (verse 127). Only then are we able to show that every action He takes is right – even when by human standards it may look like the wrong or ill-advised way of doing something.
