Lesson 20: Quiet heart
www.bible.com/bible/59/psa.119
145 With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes.
146 I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies.
147 I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words.
148 My eyes are awake before the watches of the night, that I may meditate on your promise.
149 Hear my voice according to your steadfast love; O LORD, according to your justice give me life.
150 They draw near who persecute me with evil purpose; they are far from your law.
151 But you are near, O LORD, and all your commandments are true.
152 Long have I known from your testimonies that you have founded them forever.
In today’s section of this Psalm we learn how to have a quiet heart in God’s presence. It is human for us to cry out to God, and He wants us to do so (verses 145 – 146); but there is great peace to be found in believing His word.
What we have cried for in the bright sunlight of the daytime when we could see danger and enemies around us (see 2 Kings 6:15 –17) we can by meditation make real to our heart in the nighttime when the shadows themselves want to be an even greater enemy (verses 147 – 148).
Our faith coming from that midnight meditation will help us to see His justice will prevail and give us eternal life. He will hear our prayers and we can know we are safe in Him because all enemies are far away from Him and therefore also far away from us (verses 149 – 150).
In this nearness to God we will find our quiet heart. Here we will find all his words to be true (verse 151). Here we will find the peace that passes all understanding in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). That peace will guard our hearts and minds and is the source of our quiet heart.
