Lesson 21: Remembering redemption
www.bible.com/bible/59/psa.119
153 Look on my affliction and deliver me, for I do not forget your law.
154 Plead my cause and redeem me; give me life according to your promise!
155 Salvation is far from the wicked, for they do not seek your statutes.
156 Great is your mercy, O LORD; give me life according to your rules.
157 Many are my persecutors and my adversaries, but I do not swerve from your testimonies.
158 I look at the faithless with disgust, because they do not keep your commands.
159 Consider how I love your precepts! Give me life according to your steadfast love.
160 The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.
Another mark of maturity in Christ is the art of remembering. We teach ourselves to remember the things God has done for us. Verse 153 begins this section with a reminder that deliverance comes from Him who has delivered us before because we have not forgotten His law.
Verse 155 – we also remember what life was like before we accepted his salvation. The Apostle Paul also said this was a good thing for us to remember because it makes us appreciate what God has done and is doing in our lives (Ephesians 2:11-12). We also remember His mercy (verse 156).
From verses 157 – 158 we are reminded how remembering God’s goodness to us can help us through times of persecution or danger or attack from others. It is so easy, when we forget, to think that no one cares about us, but God never forgets us! God never leaves us! And remembering his promises makes it possible for us to exercise our faith in Him during these times of difficulty.
The very best way of remembering is by memorizing Scripture so God can use the verses we learn to remind us of His goodness in such difficult times.
