Lesson 13 – Do Not be Afraid
Read 2 Kings 1:1-17 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/2KI.1.ESV
2 Kings 1:15 – Then the angel of the Lord said to Elijah, Go down with him; do not be afraid of him. So he arose and went down with him to the king.

After King Ahab died, his son Ahaziah became the new king of Samaria. One day Ahaziah was on the roof of his house where it was cooler, and the railing broke and he fell through the balcony railing and was injured. Servants carried him to his bed. The king sent messengers to an idol-god to find out if he was going to recover.

The angel of God told Elijah to meet the king’s messengers and say, “Is it because there is no God in Israel you are consulting an idol-god? Here is a message from the true God – you are not going to get out of that bed you are in; you are going to die from your injuries.”

The messengers went straight back to King Ahaziah. He asked them why they were back so soon. They told him a man who met them on the way said to go back to the king, and then they gave him the message from God. Ahaziah asked what the man looked like, and the messengers told him he wore a shaggy garment with a leather belt.

“That has to be Elijah,” Ahaziah said. He sent a captain with fifty men to Elijah, who was sitting on the top of a hill.

“Oh Holy Man, king’s orders: Come down!” yelled the captain.

“If I am truly a holy man, let lightning from heaven strike you and your fifty men,” Elijah answered. Immediately a huge lightning bolt from God struck and burned up all the soldiers.

King Ahaziah sent another captain and fifty more men. God did the same thing to them.

The third captain who was sent, knowing what had happened to the other one hundred soldiers, fell on his knees before Elijah and begged, “O Holy Man, have respect for the lives of me and my fifty men!”

The angel of God told Elijah to go with them to the king and to not be afraid. Elijah told the king, “Because you sent messengers to consult an idol-king, as though there is no God in Israel to whom you could pray, you will never get out of that bed alive.”

And King Ahaziah died, exactly as God had said. Ahaziah’s brother Joram became the next king of Samaria.
