Lesson 21 - Naaman is Healed after He Humbly Obeys
Read 2 Kgs. 5:1-14 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/2KI.5.ESVv
2 Kings 5:14 – So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God, and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child, and he was clean.
Naaman was an important general in the army; God used him to bring victory to his country. He was held in high regard by his king, but he had a serious, contagious skin disease called leprosy. On one of their raids against Israel, a young Israelite girl was captured and brought to his country to be Naaman’s wife’s maid.
One day she said to her mistress, “If only your husband could meet the prophet in my country (she was referring to Elisha), he could be healed of his skin disease.”
After hearing this, Naaman went straight to his king. The king wrote a letter to the king of Israel. Naaman left immediately, taking a lot of silver, gold and clothing as payment.
When the king of Israel read the letter from the other king, he tore his clothes and exclaimed, “Am I a god, with power to bring life or death, that I get orders to heal this man of his disease? I think this king is trying to pick a fight with Israel!”
When Elisha heard the king had ripped his clothes to shreds, he told him to send the man to him. So Naaman arrived at Elisha’s door with all his horses and chariots. Instead of coming out to see Naaman in person, Elisha sent his servant to tell him to go dip himself seven times in the Jordan River, and he would be healed.
Naaman lost his temper. “I expected the man of God to come out and meet me in person, wave his hand over me, call on the name of his God, and cure me. There are rivers much cleaner than the Jordan – at least I would not come out of those rivers dirtier than I went in!” Naaman, who was very angry, turned around and rode away, fast.
But his servants caught up with him and tried to reason with him. “Sir, if the prophet had told you to do something difficult and heroic, would you not have gone ahead and done it to be healed? So why not do this simple thing he said – wash and be clean?”
Naaman responded to his servants, humbling himself by following Elisha’s orders, and dipped himself into the Jordan River seven times. When he came up from the river the seventh time, his skin was completely healed, fresh and clear as a baby’s skin.
*When have you been humbled by God? How did He work in your heart to be willing to humbly submit to His steps for your healing – physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually?
