Lesson 27 – God’s Power of Resurrection
Read 2 Kings 8:1-6 https://www.bible.com/bible/59/2KI.8.ESV
From 2 Kings 8:5 – My lord, O king, here is the woman, and here is her son whom Elisha restored to life.
Many years previously, Elisha had told the woman whose son was miraculously restored to life to go live in another land, because God had ordered a seven-year famine for Israel. The woman did what Elisha told her, and she and her family lived as aliens and strangers in another country for seven years. When the years of famine were over, she and her family returned to Israel. She went straight to the king and asked for their home and land back.
The king was talking to Elisha’s servant, asking him about all the miracles God has performed through Elisha. Just as the servant was telling the king about God bringing someone back from the dead to life, the woman appeared in the king’s court to ask to have their home and land returned.
“Look,” Elisha’s servant said. "Here is the woman I was just telling you about whose son was brought back from the dead to life!”
The king wanted to hear all the details, so the woman filled him in. The king assigned an officer to her case, telling him to be sure the woman and her family got their home and all their land back, plus the profits from the land during the seven years they were gone!
Jesus rose from the dead after He had been crucified, proving to us for all time that He has defeated death forever. While this woman’s son died again later, Jesus’ resurrection guaranteed us the same kind of eternal life He now has. Even though Jesus has been gone from this earth for nearly 2000 years, He will return again in the same way His disciples watched Him leaving – He will descend from the clouds with great power and glory. Those of us who believe and trust Him today will be there with Him when He returns – see Jude 1:14-15 and other such Scriptures.
His promise to us, in such places as Romans 8:26-39, is that nothing can separate us from His love. In verses like John 1:12 and 3:16 He offers us eternal life. When He raises us from the dead it will be to new bodies which cannot die (1 Corinthians 15:50-58). We are free to serve Him in any way He asks, without fear and without loss of eternity.
*If you knew for certain you would live forever no matter what happened to your body, how would it change how you live today?
