Lesson 2: God is Real

The first thing we need to know about God is that God is Real.

Hebrews 11: 1, 6 – “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen…And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him."

Most people have difficulty believing that God is Real because their version of faith is just the opposite of what is written in this verse. They say, "I will believe it when I see it" rather than “I will see it when I believe it." Although we act like doubting Thomas, God mercifully helps us in our unbelief by giving us logical evidences that He is Real.

The first evidence for the existence of God is called the Ontological Argument or the argument of Being.

Exodus 3:13-14. "Moses said to God, 'If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is His Name?’ what shall I say to them?' And He said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel, I AM has sent me to you’."

The amazing truth is that God declares that He just is. He is the Great I Am. He has always been and always will be Who He is, the Supreme one and only Deity. He does not have to prove His existence. He simply tells Moses that He is and that He has called His people to worship Him.

The very fact that anyone even considers that a Supreme Being exists, and we do, admits that there must be a God. Why? Because if God did not exist then we would not conceive of Him. If there is no God then why would every culture on the planet have an automatic desire to worship something or someone higher or above themselves? It is not logical to say that people could conceive of God and have an automatic desire to worship if God had not put it in their hearts: Ecclesiastes 3:11 "…He has put eternity into man’s heart..."

God put eternity in the hearts of all mankind first so we might conceive of Him, and then secondly to motivate us to seek out a relationship with Him. It is this universal and automatic desire to worship in the hearts of all mankind that shows us that God is Real.

The second logical evidence for the existence of God is called the Cosmological Argument or the argument of Beginnings. Genesis 1:1 - "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth."

Original Hebrew: "At the beginning of (time), God created from nothing the heavens (space) and the earth (matter)."

The very first line in the Bible tells us that there really was a time when there was a beginning. If something has a beginning, then there must be an Ultimate Beginner. Why? Because nothing cannot produce something.

This is what makes evolution illogical. To do away with the existence of God, the evolutionist says the universe did not come from God but from the Big Bang. But the Big Bang actually proves His existence. The theory says that there was a beginning point in creation where all of life suddenly exploded into existence from a tiny ball of dirt. A great question for someone who believes this is, "Who made the dirt?" Something cannot come from nothing. Today, scientists call this dilemma the "X Factor" which is a fancy way of saying, "We have no idea." Other questions to ask are: "Where did the space for the universe come from? Where did matter come from? Where did the laws of the universe come from? How did matter get so perfectly organized? Where did the energy come from to do all the organizing? When, where, why, and how did life come from nothing?" If ever there was a time when there was nothing, then what would we have today? Nothing! God is Real, He made what exists from nothing.

* What does eternity mean to you today?
