Lesson 8: God Chooses to be Personal
The fact is, God does not have to have a personal relationship with any one of us. Yet, the fact is, God, Who is absolutely Independent and does not need a single thing, still chooses to have a relationship with fallen sinful creatures! That is amazing! Think about it. Of all things to have a relationship with, especially when you do not need to, God has chosen people like us who have rebelled against Him. Therefore, when we understand that God did not have to, and certainly does not need to, but chooses anyway to provide us a way to have a personal relationship with Him, it sure makes one grateful that God is Personal.
But, hold that thought and move on to the second attribute of God. You see, in order to appreciate the fact that God is Personal, we need to realize that God is not just Independent, but that God Is also Immense.
Psalm 139:7-10 - “Where shall I go from Your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there! If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me. "
The Bible declares that God is not only Independent, He is also Omnipresent or Immense – everywhere-present. In other words, there is no place in all of existence that a person could hide from Him. Why? Because, wherever you go, there He is! And when you keep in mind the enormous scope of the known universe while at the same time acknowledging that God is above and beyond it all and yet exists through it all, our brains begin to get lost in the immensity of God. And if that little mental exercise does not do the trick for you, we look at more facts.
If a person were able to travel at the speed of light it would take them 8.5 minutes just to reach the sun which is 93 million miles away. But, if they wanted to reach the nearest star it would take them 4.5 years traveling at the speed of light. If a person wanted to just make it across our galaxy, the Milky Way, it would take them 100,000 light years. Just one galaxy! But, even if they could travel at the speed of light, they would still never make it. Why? Because as you approach the speed of light, mass increases outwardly into infinity. Or in other words, you would physically begin to spread out and get bigger and bigger.
Even if we wanted to try, it would still be impossible to reach God. But the great news is, the Bible says if we want to reach God then we simply repent of our sins and He comes down to us, into our hearts.
1 Corinthians 3:16 - “Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?"
This is the incredible truth. When we get saved, Jesus is never far off. He comes to live within our heart. Therefore, He is intimately with us wherever we go. That is pretty Personal. When we can finally grasp the fact that God is Independent and Immense and yet He still chooses to be Personal, it changes our life. More in our next lesson.
