Lesson 7: God’s Sovereignty in Destroying Evil
Revelation 19:11-12, 14-15 - “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself…And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty.”
This leads us to the fourth thing that God has done about evil and suffering: He appointed a day when evil will cease.
One thing the Bible is absolutely clear about is that Jesus Christ is coming back! Above is just one of many passages from the Old and New Testaments that clearly speak to this. When He returns, the Bible says, the good news is that He will put an end to all this evil and suffering that we see in this world today and totally renovate this planet back like it was in the Garden of Eden.
This should spur on some urgency to say “yes” to God's goodness now instead of a “no” like Adam and Eve did back in the Garden of Eden and make the same mistake. God wants a loving relationship with each of us. In order for that to be a true and loving possibility, we too have the ability to make a choice. We can say “yes” to God's goodness or “no,” and just like it was in the beginning so it is today. God will honor our decision! But rest assured, one day, it will be too late. One day everyone will stand before God to be judged. Our choice only determines whether we will be judged for our works as unbelievers in Christ, or for which rewards we receive as a part of His Church.
So the question is this: "If you were to die right now, or if the Rapture of the Church would take place now, are you ready?" God is not being a tyrant here! He is not responsible for the evil and suffering we see in our world today and He has done some incredible things about it! He is Sovereign! He has judged it, put a limit on it, made a way out of it, and very soon, He will put an end to it. He is waiting and putting up with this evil not because He condones it or does not care. No! The Bible says He is not willing that any should perish. He is giving people time to respond before it is too late. He is being merciful. Accept His offer and be saved before it is too late.
This is the awesome message we get to tell others. God not only exists, but through Jesus Christ people really can have an intimate, personal relationship with the Creator of the universe. If the world is ever to believe our message, then we must stop acting like we do not truly believe Him.
* What can you do today to demonstrate that God is Sovereign?
