Lesson 10: God's Holiness Generates a Reminder, part 3

The fourth clue reminding us that we need Jesus to get to God is in the Table of Showbread and Lampstand.

Exodus 25:23,30,31,37,40 - "You shall make a table of acacia wood. Two cubits shall be its length, a cubit its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height…And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before me regularly. You shall make a lampstand of pure gold. The lampstand shall be made of hammered work: its base, its stem, its cups, its calyxes, and its flowers shall be of one piece with it…You shall make seven lamps for it. And the lamps shall be set up so as to give light on the space in front of it…And see that you make them after the pattern for them, which is being shown you on the mountain."

When you entered into the Holy Place of the Tabernacle you encountered a table with bread and a Lampstand. Bread was a staple food at mealtime, and mealtime represented sustenance and fellowship. To have a source of light, especially at night, was very important. It symbolized not only light, but life. If you had no light, your life could be in danger. Therefore, what the bread and light in the Tabernacle showed us was that to have a sustained life and a source of life with God we need Holy Bread and Holy Light.

Our source of Bread and Holy Light is Jesus.

John 6:51,8:12 - "I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is My flesh…Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

Bread is often shared when we eat with friends and family – it is a time of fellowship with someone we love. The meal becomes an opportunity to share the day’s experiences, or just talk with someone we love. If we see Jesus as our bread and we share our day’s experiences in how He has led us or worked through us, then He becomes the most vital part in encouraging each other to walk more closely with Him the next day.

Light is also necessary for our life. The natural light we most often think of is the sun, but looking at the sun can damage us. The light in the Tabernacle was soft light that was made brighter because it was reflected by gold on the walls and white linen curtains. Such light would never damage us, but the glory of all the reflections would make it far more radiant than we would have imagined candlelight to be. Jesus is that radiant light that never harms.
