Lesson 16: God's Love is Faithful to Provide

1 John 1:5-10 "This is the message we have heard from Him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us."

Our verses describe two ways in which we as Christians can live – in light with Him, or in darkness alone. In this section of our study of God being love, we will see how His faithfulness to each of us who are His children will be displayed.

Our verses require us to check our own hearts to be sure we truly are His child, and we do so by how we treat our sin.

Here, then is the first way in which we as true believers know that God is faithful – by His continuing provision of our needs.

Matthew 6:25,26,28,30 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? ... And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin…But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?"

When it comes to the issue of daily provision, Jesus not only promised to provide it for us, but He also said we must not worry about it. If we have faith in God's faithfulness, then we can say goodbye to worry forever.

What a promise!

But we have a problem. You would think that since we trust in God for our eternal salvation, trusting Him for our daily provision would be natural.

But too often we keep on worrying! Sometimes we even start whining! That is a slap in the face to God because God has provided for us! We are rich in comparison to unbelievers.

Psalm 37:23-25 says it this way, “The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in His way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand. I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken or His children begging for bread.”

Thought Question: Do we believe Him?
