Lesson 6: Book of Poetry – Description

The books of poetry are:

Job – saving faith cannot be destroyed, and God proves His character to mankind. Several important things about God are found in this book:
>God sometimes draws Satan’s attention to us, which results in Satan attacking us in terrible ways, but God’s purpose is also so He will receive glory through us and because of His glory He will also bless us.
>God will not allow us to put Him into a box, limited to something we can understand.
>Questions do not bother God; only our faith in Him is important.

Psalms – living real life in a real world. These were the songs the people sang. Remember, the people in this time usually walked where they were going. Walking to Jerusalem from anywhere else in the country was a steep climb, which is why you will see the term of “song of ascents” on so many of the Psalms – they sang these praises to God as they climbed the mountains to Jerusalem.

Proverbs – man’s relationship to God, to himself, and to others. These are warnings, encouragements, and just general guidelines from a father to his son – and from God to us about relationships. They are practical for our life. They are also multiple-layered in that we can read them for something in our life one day, and then find gems of truth about God we’ve never known before the next time we read the same verses.

Ecclesiastes – the futility of life without God. The richest and wisest man in history to his time, Solomon wrote from his experiences in searching for meaning to life, fulfillment of desires, and yearning for success in life. Reading through this book is a journey of searching for anything that makes life worth living, and finding nothing in earthy life to fill the need – and then finding it in God when we simply do what He has asked of us all along but we thought it too simple to be meaningful.

Song of Solomon – the beauty of affection and romance in marriage God’s way. Marriage between one man and one woman has been God’s design for mankind since He created us. To play with sex any other way or any other time than after the marriage commitment damages us in ways we can never entirely repair. Sexual purity is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and our spouse when we bring it to the marriage bed and keep it there.
