Lesson 4 – God’s battle for us
Read Psalm 23 - www.bible.com/bible/59/psa.23.esv

How are you doing with learning God’s promises to keep your fear away?

Another way of conquering fear is to treat this as a battle. It is more than just an hour of work, chasing away the fear – and then hoping it will never return. It will be a life-long battle. You may conquer the fear that your parents will not always be there for you, because as you grow older you begin to rely on your own abilities to care for yourself, so their presence is no longer as vital as when you were a child. But fear changes as our lives change. So battling with fear will be different as you age or as circumstances in your life change.

What would be one thing you would want most if you were to go to war against an enemy you couldn’t always see? Might it be a General who knew the enemy very well, knew how to find them, where they were likely to hide, or how they were likely to attack? Such a General in a war here on earth would be worth hundreds of times any amount of wages he could be paid, because he would save his army countless lives and millions of dollars.

We have such a General in our battle against fear. God! He can see exactly where the enemy attacks each of us. He knows our minds and our thoughts before we even realize we are thinking fear-thoughts. He understands exactly what the evil one is doing in attacking us and exactly how to counter the enemy’s weapons.

In 1 Kings 20, the king of Israel was battling against an enemy much larger than his own army. The enemy had already attacked with their fortresses built on the hills – usually the strongest point of defense in a battle. But God had given His people a victory where such victory should have been impossible. So the enemy generals concluded their best battle would be to fight in the valleys where they could find places to hide and travel would be much easier than in the rocks and terrain of the hills. They concluded that Israel’s God was a God of the mountain, and therefore they would succeed if they fought in the valley instead. God gave an incredible victory to Israel that day too, because God is not just a God of the mountains, but He’s also God in the valleys.

God wants to be God of your mountains and valleys too. Just as He is God when you are victorious and happy, He wants to be your God in the valleys where fear and defeat often rule our thoughts and minds. What is His promise to you in Deuteronomy 20: 3-4 ____?

Verse to memorize:
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Psalm 23:4 (ESV)
