Lesson 3: Redeemed

Salvation means you have been purchased out of the slave market of sin. Before salvation came to your life, you were unable to please God in anything. This was because all of us were born spiritually dead – because of the curse of God on Adam and Eve’s sin, they would never be able to give birth to someone with a living spirit.

Psalm 103:4 says we are redeemed from a pit. Isaiah 44:22 says we are redeemed from our sin.

Redemption means for the first time in our life we have the ability to choose right or wrong. Before we were saved, all we could do was work for ourselves – we could never please God because we could not see or hear Him, we could not understand Him. Redemption means we can now choose to follow Him or to follow our own desires – though if we do the latter He will step in our path to show us the truth.

Romans 6:23 says the price to be paid for any sin is death. So the price Jesus had to pay for our sin was also death – 1 Peter 1:18-19 says we were redeemed with Christ’s blood, something far more precious than silver or gold. Psalm 44:26 tells us He redeemed us because of His strong love, and Jesus Himself said in John 15:13 there is no greater love anywhere than someone who gives his own life for a friend.

While for this time in our lives only our souls are redeemed, there will come a time when our bodies will also be redeemed from sin, as we see promised in Romans 8:23. Then our bodies will be free of slavery to sin too.
