Lesson 9: Children of God

When we accept this gift of salvation we are made children of God. We are born into His family. 1 John 3:1-3 says, “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who thus hopes in Him purifies himself as He is pure.”

As these verses tell us, we cannot yet understand all of who we will be when we get to Heaven. We do know from these verses we will be like Him, like Jesus. And in the Romans 8:16-17 we find the promise we will be heirs with Christ – we will look at this a bit more in the next lesson.

Think about what it would mean for you if you were suddenly to become the child of a king. You would have all the privileges of being a prince or princess in that country. Think about how your life would be different if this was true. It is true for every person who has accepted God’s gift of salvation - except the King who is our father is God Himself rather than an earthly king who, compared to God, has very limited power.
