Lesson 14: Delivered from the Power of Darkness

A great truth for us to understand about salvation is found in Colossians 1:13 – “He has delivered us from the domain of darkness…” As we’ve seen in an earlier lesson, we are no longer slaves to sin, we have the ability to say no to temptation.

This does not mean we can’t be addicted to certain sinful things in our lives. Our fleshly desires and wants can be very strong. But we do not need to be mastered by them. We have the Jesus-who-rose-from-the-dead and His power available to us to help us defeat these addictions.

Being delivered from the power of darkness also doesn’t mean we can ignore the evil one. 1 Peter 5:8 warns us to be vigilant, always on watch, because Satan is like a roaring lion searching for someone to destroy.

This deliverance from the power of darkness will not always be something we experience and therefore what we feel. It is important for us to understand we are in a battle; but while the ultimate victory has already been won, we cannot see this ultimate victory yet because the enemy has not yet acknowledged his defeat. The victory, however, IS assured because of Christ’s resurrection from the dead.
