Lesson 16: On the Rock, Christ Jesus
In the last lesson we looked at our deliverance from the view of having been released from prison and going out to help someone else also seek Jesus so they can be free. In this lesson we look at the deliverance with a view of where we serve Him – where we build our new life.
In 1 Corinthians 3:9-15 Paul describes his service to Christ as if he is making a building. God has, through this gift of salvation, placed us onto a solid rock, Jesus, so our building will have a foundation that cannot be destroyed. In these verses Paul tells us we can choose the materials for our house – wood and other materials that can perish in fire (works done by our own efforts), or we can choose the best materials of precious stones and gold and silver that cannot be destroyed by fire (giving ourselves to God to be used as He wants to use us).
We can build on this foundation of Jesus for ourselves or for His Kingdom. For example, if someone is given the gift of being able to sing well, this person can choose to sing in ways or in places that will make them famous and make them rich, or they can choose to sing for God’s kingdom and let Him take care of all their needs of this life. Matthew 6:33 promises, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Does this mean He will make us rich and famous? No, but our building we have built will stand up to the fire of God’s judgment of our works, and we will have treasure in Heaven for all eternity.
