Lesson 20: A Chosen Generation, a Holy Nation, a Peculiar People

In continuation of the last lesson, 1 Peter 2:9 also states we “are a chosen race … a holy nation, a people for His own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Let’s see what each of these things means for us.

First, notice we are a generation, not many generations as have lived over the nearly 2,000 years since this was written – we are ONE generation, because we are all children of God. We were chosen by Him – see John 15:16.

Second, we are a “nation” – a separate and distinct group of people from among all the people of the earth. We are holy, meaning we are set apart. In one town I lived, we could tell who were residents of another town up the road. They didn’t dress any differently than we did, they didn’t talk any differently than we, they didn’t look different – but their actions shouted they were different. People around us should also be able to see from our actions we are different because we belong to a different city.

Third, we are a “people” – we belong together, and just like the citizens of this neighboring town, we are distinguishable by our actions.
