Lesson 21: Heavenly Citizens
In the last lesson we read we are a separate nation and people. Philippians 3:20 tells us, “Our citizenship is in Heaven…”
Being a citizen of a particular country gives certain privileges only citizens of that country enjoy. For example, one can vote in an election only if one is a citizen. There are certain elected offices that can only be held by citizens. There are rights to certain assistance, and privileges might be restricted, too.
As a citizen of Heaven, there are many privileges exclusive to us – and access to God is one of them. We are family.
We also have responsibilities as citizens of Heaven – 2 Corinthians 5:20 says we are ambassadors for Christ, and therefore we must remain “reconciled to God” – meaning we must stay in constant communication with Him so He can tell us where He wants us to go or with whom He wants us to talk.
Being a Heavenly citizen also requires loyalty. We should be so firmly at home there that nothing here in this world could possibly lure us away from our home and our family there. More about this in our next lesson.
