Lesson 28: His Inheritance

The second inheritance mentioned in the Bible is not about something we get, but about who we are. In Ephesians 1:18 we who have accepted the Gift of Salvation are called the “riches of His glorious inheritance” – we are Jesus’ inheritance! God the Father has given all of us to Jesus as a gift for the suffering He endured on the cross for us. Jesus died so we could be reconciled to God (see lesson 3), but the Father does not keep us for Himself – He gives us to Jesus.

Please read John 17 – Jesus’ prayer, almost surely the last time He prayed with His disciples before He was crucified (remember, in verse 20 He was praying for you and me too). Jesus’ prayer is that both He and the Father will be glorified in those whom the Father had given to Him, and He in turn gave all back to the Father – we who would receive the Gift of Salvation through the sacrifice He was about to make.

This is how WE are Jesus’ inheritance – an inheritance of glory He never had before. And through our salvation, God also receives glory He never had before – a glory that displays His mercy and grace as no other created being possibly can. This is also why we should do ALL we do for His glory, so we take no glory at all away from Him by us seeking our own instead of His (Colossians 3:17).
