Lesson 1: Who Is God? (part 1)
Read Psalm 135:1-7 and Isaiah 46:8-10
If we ask, “What is God?” our answer would include the fact He is spirit, eternal, love, light, majestic, all-knowing, all-powerful, creator, and much more. All those things are important. But let’s first look at who God is.
First of all, He is sovereign. This means He is the final authority and cause of all good things. It means it is His plan being followed, and not ours (Genesis 50:20; Psalms 135:6; Isaiah 46:8-10; Romans 9:11; Ephesians 1:11). It means when everything is said and done, it will all be finished the way God intended it to be completed. Does this mean we don’t have choices? Absolutely not! We are given the right to choose, but it is God who places the choices in front of us and we are responsible for which course we choose – His or our own. Every choice has consequences – our way ends in defeat, ruin, disappointment, and sorrow; God’s way always results in blessing and His glory.
Our response to God’s sovereignty should always be immense gratefulness for His choosing us to be His child (John 15:16); a deep humility drives us to our knees to give ourselves freely to obey Him in anything He asks of us (John 15:14). The greatest errors on our part are to either take Him for granted (assume He must always be there to bandage our knees and elbows when we fall down) or treat Him like our butler (He’s only there to give us what we want, all we have to do is bring Him our grocery-list of demands).
He is someone who wants to be known. When He created us, He created us in His image. Now, since God is a spirit He doesn’t have physical attributes we can copy such as being short or tall, color of our skin, and so on. However, the Bible repeatedly talks about God’s hands (Isaiah 10:13; 36:20; 48:13; 50:2; Jeremiah 6:12; Acts 7:50; Revelation 1:20), arms (Psalm 89:21; Isaiah 51:5; 63:5; Jeremiah 27:5), eyes (Psalm 31:9; 33:18; Zechariah 2:8), feet (1 Kings 5:3; Isaiah 60:13; Ezekiel 43:7), and heart (Genesis 6:6; 1 Kings 9:3; Psalm 33:11; Jeremiah 3:15; Acts 13:22). We have those same features.
Look again at these verses and see how God uses His hands, arms, eyes, feet, and heart.
