Lesson 30: Grow in Grace and Knowledge (1)
Read Proverbs 2 - https://www.bible.com/bible/59/pro.2

How can I trust a book which was written thousands of years ago? What could possibly make it relevant to my life today?

First of all, let us look at whether or not we can believe that the Bible is God’s Word. It claims to be exactly this (Deuteronomy 6:6-9, 17-18; Joshua 1:8; 8:32-35; 2 Samuel 22:31; Psalms 1:2; 12:6; 19:7-11; 93:5; 119:9, 11, 18, 89-93, 97-100, 104-5, 161; Proverbs 30:5-6; Isaiah 55:10-11; Jeremiah 15:16; 23:29; Daniel 10:21; Matthew 5:17-19; 22:29; Mark 13:31; Luke 16:17; John 2:22; 5:24; 10:35; Acts 17:11; Romans 10:17; 1 Corinthians 2:13; Colossians 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 2:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; 3:15-17; 1 Peter 1:23-24; 2 Peter 3:15-16; Revelation 1:2; 22:18).

Would God want to author such a book for us? The answer is “yes” and we know this is true because we believe God loves us. After all, He made us with the ability to conceptualize and reason – something the animals cannot do at the same level we can (they operate by instinct rather than by reason and cannot theorize). He gave us language so we can communicate reason and concept to each other. Language and reason have only one purpose – communication. God wanted to be able to communicate with us. Therefore, the motive is love and the method is language.

God also had the opportunity to work through people who willingly chose to follow and obey Him. Writers such as Moses, Samuel, David, Solomon, Ezra, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, and many others allowed themselves to be instruments through which God gave His message to all of humanity. Many people think this is not possible but in the years I served as a secretary to different individuals, it did not take me long to figure out how they said things or how they wanted things said. If we can learn this skill from other people who may not always want another to learn such things about them, how much more is it true about God who wanted to communicate with us. The writers of Scripture were not God’s secretaries, they were not used as dictation machines; God used their lives, their experiences, their knowledge, their passion to write as they would write to communicate His word.

Motive, means, and opportunity prove a case in a court of law.
