Lesson 31: Grow in Grace and Knowledge (2)

Let us look at another element the Bible has which no other book in history has ever been able to reproduce. In fact, this argument is so compelling most people who disagree with the idea of the Bible being God’s word will go to any lengths (no matter what facts exist to say otherwise) to change historical data about the Bible. This amazing thing no other book has been able to reproduce is called prophecy. We even have people who try to duplicate this amazing feat. Over the years there have been many prophets and fortune-tellers in this world but not one of them has ever claimed a 100% accuracy of their prophecies.

The Bible’s accuracy rate to date is 100 percent which includes such items as specific individuals’ names (Isaiah 45:1-ff), and numbers of years (Jeremiah 25:11-12). There are more than 300 specific prophecies about Jesus in the Old Testament which were fulfilled by Jesus exactly, including such things as place of birth, parentage and ancestry (over which no human could have had total control). The method of His death was predicted and described in some detail in Psalm 22 which was written long before anyone had even invented crucifixion as a method of execution.

Another amazing fact is that the Bible’s human authors numbered more than 30 who wrote over a period of more than 1400 years and yet the Bible stands without a single continuity issue. Such a feat is impossible for humans (witness the phenomena of Star Wars or Star Trek books written by multiple authors – controlled by a single person or by a committee – and in less than 50 years of writing there are many continuity problems).

With these facts in mind, I believe it takes more faith to believe the Bible is NOT God’s word than it does to believe it IS. Therefore, we move on in the belief that it is God’s word.

To believe the Bible is God’s word but to believe it is not completely true makes very little sense. If God was able to miraculously produce this amazing book, how is it that He could forget and leave something in it that is not true? Rather, it would be far more logical to look at our own understanding of the Bible as being at fault rather than God being false.

*If someone you really loved – a sibling, spouse, child – was in the military and sent to another country, and a rare letter from them arrived in the mail, would you just throw it on the shelf and ignore it? Or would you rip it open the moment you received it and read every word again and again to treasure it?
*How much time do you spend each day getting to know Jesus better through the Bible, God’s love-letter to you?
