Lesson 3: Forever - Where Is Heaven? (2)

As we read in the last lesson, the Bible says we will be perfected forever. This means we will be doing work for all eternity that we will enjoy doing and which will never cause us to tire nor will we ever face the disappointment of incomplete or incorrectly completed work. The satisfaction of perfectly completing what we set out to do, of getting it done when we want it done, of feeling not the slightest pain of regret for even the smallest detail will be ours for all eternity. This is so impossible here on earth as to be almost beyond our imagination, and yet it is a truth to which we can attach our hope.

The next truth about heaven we need to look at comes from John 1:16, Colossians 1:19, and Colossians 2:9. We will have what Jesus has. 1 John 3:2 says this very clearly when it says "we shall be like Him for we shall see Him as He is." In 1 John we are told we cannot even imagine what this really means, but the two Colossians Scriptures give us a beginning view. Jesus was the fullness of God, the very nature of the Godhead in bodily form. Does this mean that we will be God in heaven? Absolutely not! It simply says we will be LIKE Him.

What was Jesus like after His resurrection? He walked through walls (John 20:19). He disappeared at will (Luke 24:30). He was not bound by gravity (Acts 1:9). He could eat and drink, though He did not need it to sustain His life (Luke 24:43). He must have had the same recognizable bodily features He had before because they recognized Him when they saw Him. He could, however, not be recognized when He so wished, though this was probably more a case of His blinding the eyes of people rather than changing His features. Since there will be no earthly people in heaven, this last ability will not be something we will need to have.

Another truth is found in 1 Corinthians 13:12. We shall know as we are known. How does God know you today? If you answer that He knows you completely, you are right. He knows every moment how many hairs are on our heads (Luke 12:7). He knows every time you stand up or sit down (Psalm 139:2). He knows every thought you have (Matthew 12:25). He knows everything about us. In 1 Corinthians 13:8 we read another very interesting statement. It says knowledge will pass away. This means we will no longer learn new things…because we already will know completely. Only wisdom will increase as we will put to use the things we will already know there.

*What do you look forward to in heaven?
