Lesson 6 – Setting a Good Foundation – Creator’s Foundation
Read Colossians 1 - https://www.bible.com/bible/59/col.1.esv

In our verses for this lesson, 15-20, we are given a look at Jesus, the foundation for our stable life. It’s as if we, upon approaching the subject of being stable in Him, have seen a building from a distance. We’ve seen the glorious parts of relationships and thanksgiving and prayer; and now we step closer and begin to look at what makes this building possible.

Verse 15 says Jesus is the image of the invisible God. Our eyes cannot see spirit-beings, so God, being Spirit, gave us a picture of Himself that we could see – Jesus. The book of Hebrews tells us much more about this picture. But just as a picture cannot give us sound or smells or taste, so Jesus cannot show us EVERYTHING about God. He does, however, show us enough that we can learn to trust Him.

The verse also says Jesus is the firstborn of all creation. Does that mean Jesus was the first to be created? No, it means He, being God, became the Lord of all creation – and the next verse tells us how. Jesus created everything that exists. Everything was created through Him and for Him. Verse 17 says He was before all things – meaning He is eternal, He is God. In Him all things are held together.

*What happens when He lets go of all things according to 2 Peter 3:10?

As stated above, Jesus could not show us everything about God, but in verse 19 we are told that the fullness of God dwells in Him so through Jesus God could reconcile everything to Himself, through Jesus’ blood shed on the cross. To understand this reconciliation, let’s look again at our building. If what is built on top of the foundation is not fastened to it correctly, a strong wind or an earthquake will easily move it off that foundation. That building is not reconciled to its foundation. Jesus’ sacrifice of His own blood made reconciliation possible for all of us so we could have peace with God. Through that sacrifice, we are fastened securely to God in an unshakable, unbreakable bond.

*According to Romans 8:29 and 1 John 3:2, of whom are we to be a picture?
