Lesson 11 - Walking Worthy
Read Ephesians 3:14-21 - https://www.bible.com/bible/59/eph.3.esv
Our second way of “responsible walking” will be found in Ephesians 4:1 which says “I therefore . . . urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called.” The “therefore” sends us back to these last verses in chapter 3 that are our focus for study today. They tell us WHY we are to walk worthy of our calling.
Paul says if we look at who we have been and who we now are in Christ, it will make us bow on our knees before the Father. That is worship. Our true worship of God comes only from that absolute knowledge that we do not deserve what He is giving us, but His grace and mercy have offered it to us so all we have to do is accept it. This gift can only be accepted in grateful submission before Him.
But God has far more for us – He wants to strengthen us with His power through His Spirit. Strengthen us for what? We might expect such power for purpose of battle – but that is not what He says. He wants Christ to indwell us, fill us with Himself through our growing faith so we can be rooted and grounded in His love. Those words speak of deep roots that enable a tree to withstand great winds. Our roots are to be deeply embedded in His love.
Again, why do we need such strength? So we have the “strength to comprehend . . . what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to KNOW the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
I love the mountains. But because of an inner ear problem, I suffer from vertigo so I can’t walk to the edge of a cliff to look out over a vast display. I will fall if I try. God doesn’t want us to have spiritual vertigo that makes us afraid and unable to see the vastness that is His love for us. We have to be strong in Him to comprehend this vastness.
Can we obtain this strength on our own? No. But God can. Look now at verses 20 and 21. He is not limited to what we can ask or think. He is not limited to ALL that we can ask or think. He is not limited to MORE than all that we can ask or think. He is not limited to ABUNDANTLY more than all we can ask or think. So, if ALL that I can ask or think is the outside limitation of my ability – how much is FAR MORE ABUNDANTLY ABOVE my limitations?
That, my friend, is the greatness of the God we worship. To You, my Lord and God, be glory forever and ever!
*What is worship?
*How does God strengthen us?
*Can we obtain this strength on our own?
