Sexual Purity – Lesson 4
Why is Sexual Purity Vital for the Christian?

We're a target for sexual immorality.

The minute we become a Christian, we become a target for the devil and his agents, the demons. When we begin to serve the Lord, we are targeted by our enemy. Since the devil is not omnipresent, nor is he omnipotent, he assigns his demons to Christians. They will cleverly scheme a way to bring us to failure, by leading us through our own desires into sin. The Bible admonishes us in James 1:4, “And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” We are tempted by own desires. What the devil and his demons do is observe and learn us, including our weaknesses and tendencies, and our desires. Then using these desires, the evil ones orchestrate our fall into sin.

Their main goal is to dishonor Christianity, hoping also to make those around us, on whom we would have had a positive impact for God, follow us down into the same sin. There will be a tragic ripple effect which will lead to a massive slide backward, away from God’s gift of salvation. Then people in the world will ask what difference there is between them and Christians if the same immoral behavior is witnessed from Christians they practice. Those who do not believe in Jesus will see no need to be taught the things of God. Taking the Gospel further will be hindered, and the devil has won a victory.

God paints us a word picture in 2 Timothy 2:20-21: “Now in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver but also of wood and clay, some for honorable use, some for dishonorable. Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from what is dishonorable, he will be a vessel for honorable use, set apart as holy, useful to the master of the house, ready for every good work.” God requires us to be His holy instruments, and He also warns us to be alert. “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Apply God’s Word to your life:

Write your prayer of consecration to your Lord, asking Him to forgive you and make you His holy instrument.
