Does God really guide His followers today?

If He did not, then He would not be God at all, and his followers would be sheep without a shepherd. Fortunately, God promises abundant guidance for His children.

The number one way to seek God’s guidance is through His word, the Bible. “Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). God’s word contains His principles for living, and His Holy Spirit gives us the power to follow those ways.

Though many of our specific situations or decisions are not directly addressed in the Word, we can always apply His principles. God will not direct us to violate His commands. You never have to ask, “Does God want me to cheat on this test?” or, “I wonder if the Lord wants me to be unfaithful to my spouse?”

For young believers especially, God often guides and speaks through older, mature believers. “Where there is no guidance the people fall, but in abundance of counselors there is victory” (Proverbs 11:14).

This is another reason why it’s so important to belong to a good church, where you can find those wise mentors and guides.

God also guides through our conscience, and sometimes in a “gentle whisper” (1 Kings 19:12) – which is why it is good to spend “quiet time” talking with Him in prayer and listening to Him. The noise of daily living can easily drown out God’s voice.

“From there you will search again for the LORD your God. And if you search for Him with all your heart and soul, you will find Him”(Deuteronomy 4:29).
