Lesson 28 – The King’s Victory
Read Matthew 28 – www.bible.com/bible/59/mat.28.esv

In this 28th chapter of Matthew, we see the King’s victory in three wonderful ways. The first is victory over death – verses 1-10. He paid the price for our sin on the cross by shedding His blood in our place. It is we who deserve death for what we have done against God, but Jesus paid the price for us. We could never have known the price He paid was enough for ALL our sin if He had stayed dead. He didn’t!! He rose from death, conquering it to show us He had conquered the sin as well.

His second victory was over His enemies – verses 11-15. Those who had killed Him, even though they knew who He truly was, now tried to cover up their crime and guilt with a lie – but Jesus rose from the grave and even this lie was shown to be exactly that.

His third victory was over evil that rules over this world and tries to keep people from knowing the truth – verses 16-20. Jesus sent His followers into every part of the world so they could tell people His offer of forgiveness of sin was real.

A question often asked by people is – “If Jesus died for all sin and has conquered sin and death, why do people still die and still sin; and why can’t everyone receive this payment for their sins?” Some people insist that if Jesus died for the sins of the whole world, everyone will go to heaven.

Jesus’ victory over sin and death did not change the fact He gave us a choice in this important question. The price is paid and the victory is won – but we must still choose if we wish to accept for ourselves what He has done. If He simply made the choice for us, and insisted that everyone would come to live with Him in heaven when we die, there would be no choice at all. We would simply be puppets on strings. God wants everyone to be with Him, but He leaves the choice of whether or not we WILL be to us. We must choose to be there.

But we cannot choose HOW to get to heaven – He paid the price with His death, and He says that price is the only way we can come. There is nothing we can do to earn heaven – the price is already paid in full. We simply believe and accept Jesus’ way He made. You need to pay nothing for this – but it will cost everything you have and are because you must give yourself to Him so He can make you into one of His kingdom citizens.

*Have you made the most important choice of all and given yourself wholeheartedly to Jesus, the King of kings and Lord of lords who conquered sin and death?
