Lesson 10
El Elyon – The Most High (1 Chronicles 16:1-2; Genesis 14:18-19)

“Praise, Thank, Petition God When You Pray” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Read 2 Samuel 6:12-19, 1 Chronicles 15:1-10, 25-29, 16:1-16, Psalm 96, 105 www.bible.com/bible/59/2sa.6.esv

After King David built houses for himself in Jerusalem, he pitched a tent for the Chest of the Covenant of God. Then David, the elders of Israel, and his army commanders went with great rejoicing to bring the Chest of the Covenant of God back to Jerusalem. King David, the Levites (priests who served in the work of worship), the choir, band, and the director of music were all dressed in ceremonial linen, and celebrated all the way back to the City of David. God had commanded only the Levites could carry the Chest of God. El Elyon helped and strengthened them, so they sacrificed offerings to The Most High as they traveled. The whole country was with them in this big parade, shouting, cheering and playing every kind of instrument.

The Levites set the Chest of the Covenant of God in the center of the tent, and David worshiped there with more offerings. David then blessed the people in the name of El Elyon, The Most High. The king gave each person some delicious party food, and then they went to their homes.

David assigned some of the Levites to lead worship – to intercede, give thanks, and praise The Most High God. On this joyful day, King David started the practice of praise and worship in Israel, led by Asaph, a man who also wrote many Psalms.

Apply God’s Word to your life:
*What has God chosen you to do? (1 Chronicles 15:2)
Are you doing these things obediently, wholeheartedly, and with all your might?
*What are the sacrifices God wants from us?

*As you read Psalm 96 and 105, notice all the thanks and praises David expresses for El Elyon, The Most High. For what does the king ask God?
*When you pray, remember “ACTS.” Practice including these four elements in your prayers following this order. Focus on El Elyon, The Most High, first, then agree with God you’ve fallen short of His holiness and ask His forgiveness. Thank the Lord for what He’s done in the past, and last, ask Him to provide for the needs of others and yourself.
