King David made himself at home in Jerusalem, and Yahweh-Shalom gave him peace from all Israel’s enemies. David told the prophet Nathan, “I’m comfortable in my luxurious house, but the Chest of the Covenant of God is in a tent. This is not right!” Nathan replied, “Go and do whatever is on your heart; God is with you.”

But God spoke to Nathan in a vision that night, telling him to let David know the Lord God had lived in a tent among His people since He brought them up out of slavery in Egypt. God had taken David from following sheep in a pasture to making him King over His people Israel. Yahweh-Nissi, The Lord My Banner, had lead David everywhere he went and had given him victory in battle. David was becoming famous; his great name was beginning to be known all over the world. God promised to plant His people Israel in their own home, free from the affliction of evil men.

The Lord’s message for David through Nathan: Instead of David building God a house, God was going to build David an everlasting house! He promised to firmly establish David’s rule through his son, who would build a house to honor God. The Lord guaranteed David’s kingdom would be permanent. God promised to be David’s son’s Father, and David’s son would be God’s son. The Lord would discipline him when he needed it and God would never remove His steadfast love from him. David’s family and kingdom were permanently secured, and his royal throne would be as solid as a rock. (Read Matthew 1:6 and 1:17 to see how God fulfilled this promise.)

Nathan told David everything God had said and shown him in his vision. Then King David went to his special place of prayer and sat before Adonai, his Lord and Master. “Who am I, and who is my family, Lord God, that you’ve brought me so far? But, compared with what you’ve promised us in the future, this is nothing. You know me, Lord, and we both know You’ve done all this because of Who You are, not because of who I am. Thank You for giving me this amazing glimpse into the future!

You are great, El Elyon, the Lord Most High, and there is none like You and no god who can compare with You. Your people are unique, also, because You, our Yahweh-Nissi, redeemed us for Yourself, saving us from slavery in Egypt as our Yahweh-Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts, and making us victorious in battle after battle against our enemies who worship idols. We are your people forever, and You are our El Shaddai, the All-Sufficient One.”

David trusted God completely to do what He had promised!
