Not only did God help David, but also the men who were faithful to him. We think we’re up against impossible odds sometimes, but God and His faithful servant can win battles whole armies would fear to engage.
The Lord of Hosts gave King David thirty Mighty Men who not only fought valiantly in battle but were also his loyal friends, even before David became King over Israel.
Jashobeam was chief of the Mighty Men. Commander over 24,000 soldiers, killed 300 men in one battle by himself. (1 Chronicles 11:11, 27:2)
Eleazar, the second of David’s Inner Three, got stuck behind enemy lines after the Israelite army withdrew and killed every Philistine who came against him with just a sword. Even after his hand was too tired to hold the sword anymore, God wrapped His own hand around Eleazar’s to keep the sword in his hands. This was a big victory for Yahweh-Sabaoth, the Lord of Hosts.
Shammah defended a field of lentils alone against so many Philistines the rest of his friends fled – but Yahweh-Sabaoth helped him win a tremendous victory.
Abishai, David’s nephew, killed 300 men in battle, helped only by the Lord of Hosts. He earned a place as captain of David’s thirty Mighty Men.
Abishai went into Saul’s camp with David. Saul and his men were all sound asleep. Abishai wanted to kill Saul, but David rebuked Abishai, warning him not to harm the Lord’s anointed. (1 Samuel 26:6-9) Abishai took this lesson to heart; after David became king, Abishai recommended killing Shimei for cursing the Lord’s anointed. (2 Samuel 19:21)
Joab told Abishai to take courage, Yahweh-Sabaoth would do what was needed to protect His people and cities. When Joab and half of the Israelite army moved toward one enemy to fight, they ran away as fast as they could run. The other enemy army Abishai was to fight saw them retreating and also ran away. The all-powerful Lord of Hosts won another amazing victory, without a drop of blood being shed! (2 Samuel 10:8-14)
King David was exhausted during another battle against the Philistines. Abishai rescued David from a fierce warrior wielding a heavy spear, killing him in the strength of Yahweh-Sabaoth. (2 Samuel 21:17)
Abishai killed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt. Yahweh-Saboath gave David victory wherever the Israelite army fought. (1 Chronicles 18:12-13)
Benaiah, another of David’s Mighty Men, got caught in a pit one day with a lion and killed the cornered lion. He also fought a giant who had a huge spear while Benaiah only had a stick, but the Lord of Hosts helped him win that battle. David put Benaiah in charge of his bodyguard. (1 Chronicles 11:22-25)
Apply God’s Word to your life:
Yahweh-Saboath, the Lord of Hosts, is our Deliverer and Strong Tower.
*What impossible battle are you facing?
*Will you ask Yahweh-Saboath to deliver you and be your strong tower, and then give Him the glory for the victory?
