- Availability – suitable or ready for use; of service
- Commitment – dedicating yourself to something or someone

Abraham, now an old man, had been blessed by God in every way. He spoke to his main servant who was in charge of everything Abraham had, and asked him to swear by the God of Heaven and Earth to find a wife for his son Isaac from the land of his birth, not from the Canaanites where they were living.

His servant asked, “If the woman refuses to leave her home and come with me, should I take Isaac back to your home country?”

Abraham replied, “Oh no, never take my son back there, because God took me from the land of my father and promised me to give this land to my children. My God will enable you to find a wife for Isaac, and if the woman won’t come back here with you, you’re freed from this oath. But never take my son back to my homeland.” Abraham was determined to obey and follow God, and persistent in instructing his servant.

The servant loaded gifts from Abraham on ten camels. Outside a city, he stopped the camels at a well. It was evening, the cooler time of day when women came to draw water from the wells. The servant prayed and asked the God of his master Abraham to give him a sign as to who should be Isaac’s wife – he asked God to let the woman who offers to water the camels be His choice for Isaac.

The servant had barely finished speaking to God when a beautiful young woman appeared carrying a water jug. The servant ran to meet her and asked for a sip of water from her jug.

The young woman replied, “Certainly, and I’ll also pour enough water into the trough for your camels to drink all they want.”

The servant was in awe of this quick answer to his prayer, but he still wasn’t completely sure this was God’s choice for Isaac – what if she wouldn’t go back with him? He brought beautiful jewelry to the young woman, and asked if he could stay with her family overnight.

She answered, “Yes, there’s plenty of room in our house for you, and lots of straw and feed for your camels, also.” Then she ran home to show her family the new jewelry and tell them what had happened.

Abraham’s servant bowed worshipfully before the Lord and prayed, “I bless You, God of my master Abraham. You’ve been so generous to him by leading me right to the door of this beautiful young woman’s family!” The servant showed the traits of attentiveness and availability after he asked God to lead him to Isaac’s future wife, and commitment to his master Abraham in carefully following his orders.

Apply God’s Word to your life:
*What kind of wife did Abraham want for Isaac, and why was this important?
*What can you do this week to make godly friends who will build you up in the Lord?
*How did God help the servant find the right girl?
*How will you watch for God to lead you today? How ready are you to do what God shows you?
