Day 29: Joseph takes Jesus
to Egypt
Read Matthew 2:13-15
Hosea 11:1 - When Israel was a child, I loved him, and out of Egypt I called my
son.
Many prophesies have several meanings. Our verse above is both a reminder to
the Jews of that day when they had been servants and slaves many hundreds of
years earlier, and also a prophecy for the future of the Messiah having to go
to Egypt and being called back home from there.
Joseph also received a dream from God, a warning to leave Bethlehem immediately
to go to Egypt. Joseph woke his family right away, and they left town during
the night. The gifts from the Wise Men provided for things they needed along
the way and for living while they stayed in Egypt. God always provides
everything we need when He asks us to go somewhere or do something. We should never
worry about our own needs (Matthew 6:33).
Egypt is also a reminder to us that Jesus did not come to earth to live a life
of comfort and ease. In His trial before Pilate, He said He came to earth to
show people Truth (John 18:37). He said He IS Truth (John 14:6). In the first
temptation in the Garden of Eden, Satan told Eve there are no consequences to
sin (“you will not surely die” – Genesis 3:4). God says sin’s penalty is always
death (Romans 6:23). Jesus says He is our only Way back to God (John 14:6).
*What happened when you believed the lie that sin has no consequences?
